Community HERoes Among Us: Rekina Perry

Rekina perry

The Organization for Prostitution Survivors (OPS), EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Rekina seeks to lead the organization as it advocates on behalf of and centers victims and survivors of sexual exploitation and gender-based violence. This is done by operating through a trauma-informed lens, with lived experiences and working with survivors.

Her some of her key responsibilities include, organizational/program development, public relations, optimization

of financial/asset management, and advocating for the systems and policies that are right for OPS and the community of survivors it serves.

If you could describe yourself in one word, what would that be and why?

This is hard for me to do, but I think I can in two. Others describe me as honest and tenacious. Whatever it is that comes my way, I will find a way to get through.

What is your favorite inspirational quote or best piece of advice given to you?

You don’t have to have it all figured out! Be patient with the process and you'll be amazed where you end up. Lost dreams become awakened and new possibilities arise!

Do you give back to the community with your team and work? If so, what does this look like?

OPS is a survivor-led community for survivors. We offer a range of services that seek to support each survivor on their own journey toward healing and empowerment.

In honor of Women's History Month, can you spotlight a woman from either your life, history or your community who has personally inspired you?

My mother, Cynthia, is my greatest inspiration, cheerleader, and advisor. If it were not for her unwavering love and support, I would have fallen victim to who I thought I was instead of who and what I was meant to be.

Mother, friend, confidant, supporter... she inspires my resilience and models true grace, integrity, and dignity.

As a woman community leader, how do you approach mentoring and supporting younger generations of women in your community to ensure a sustainable legacy of leadership and empowerment?

I approach supportive mentorship first with understanding. I see who they are and listen to the hopes and dreams that the person has for themselves. Additionally, I aim to provide guidance by sharing some of my experiences and lessons that I have learned. I support by offering practical advice and connecting them with relevant resources or networks that provide the opportunities, development, and leadership opportunities that they need and want.

Fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where women feel empowered to voice their ideas and take healthy risks to create new experiences is the goal and is crucial for their personal growth and development. Each woman has a unique process that they must go through; I remain present for that process.
